Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the rock of our salvation.

Let us come before him with thanksgiving, and shout to him with songs of praise.

For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.

The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us worship and bow low; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his hand. Today, if only you would listen to his voice!

Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wilderness,[^1] [^1]: Meribah means "quarreling" and Massah means "testing"; the place names echo the accusation being made.

where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did.

For forty years I loathed that generation, and I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray; they have not known my ways."

So I swore in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."

Meribah and Massah (verse 8) are place names that literally mean "quarreling" and "testing." They refer to the event described in Exodus 17:1–7, where the Israelites in the wilderness complained about lack of water and tested God at Rephidim. The place was called Massah and Meribah precisely because of the people’s rebellion. A similar incident is described in Numbers 20:1–13 at Kadesh.
