In the days of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up against Jerusalem to make war on it, but they could not prevail against it.

When word came to the house of David, "Aram has joined forces with Ephraim," the heart of the king and the heart of his people shook like the trees of the forest before the wind.

Then the LORD said to Isaiah, "Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-Jashub,* at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer's Field,

and say to him: Be careful, keep calm, and do not be afraid. Do not lose heart over these two smoldering stubs of firewood—over the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah.

Because Aram, together with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has plotted evil against you, saying,

"Let us march against Judah, tear it apart, and divide it among ourselves, and set the son of Tabeel on its throne"—

this is what the Lord GOD says: It will not happen; it will not take place.

For the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered beyond being a people.

The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you do not stand firm in faith, you will not stand at all.

Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz:

"Ask the LORD your God for a sign—as deep as the realm of the dead or as high as the heavens."

But Ahaz said, "I will not ask; I will not put the LORD to the test."

Then Isaiah said, "Listen now, house of David! Is it not enough for you to wear out human patience? Must you weary my God as well?

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will call him Immanuel.*

He will eat curds and honey by the time he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right.

For before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.

The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on your father's house such days as have not come since Ephraim broke away from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.

On that day the LORD will whistle for the flies from the distant streams of Egypt and for the bees from the land of Assyria.

They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the clefts of the rocks, on all the thornbushes and at all the watering holes.

On that day the Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the River—the king of Assyria—to shave your head and the hair of your legs, and to take off your beard as well.

On that day a man will keep alive only a young cow and two sheep.

And because of the abundance of milk they give, he will have curds to eat. All who remain in the land will live on curds and honey.

On that day, every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver will be given over to briers and thorns.

Men will go there with bow and arrow, for the whole land will be covered with briers and thorns.

As for all the hills once cultivated with the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns; they will become places where cattle are turned loose and sheep run free.

Events

The chapter is set during the Syro-Ephraimite War (ca. 735–732 B.C.), one of the best-documented crises in Judah’s history. King Rezin of Aram (Syria) and King Pekah of Israel formed an alliance to resist the growing Assyrian threat under Tiglath-Pileser III. When Judah, under King Ahaz, refused to join the coalition, they decided to depose Ahaz and install a puppet king called "the son of Tabeel" (v. 6)—likely an Aramean who would be loyal to their interests. This plan threatened to end the Davidic dynasty. Parallel accounts are found in 2 Kings 16 and 2 Chronicles 28, which report that Ahaz ultimately chose to seek help from Assyria instead of trusting in the Lord’s promise through Isaiah.

People

Ahaz was king of Judah (ca. 735–715 B.C.) and the son of Jotham. He is described negatively in 2 Kings 16 for introducing idolatry and even sacrificing his own son. His name (אָחָז, "he has grasped") may be a shortened form of Jehoahaz. An Assyrian inscription from Tiglath-Pileser III mentions "Jehoahaz of Judah" as a tributary, confirming his historicity.

Rezin (רְצִין) was the last king of the Aramean kingdom in Damascus. He is mentioned in Assyrian sources as "Rasunnu of Damascus." Assyria conquered Damascus in 732 B.C., and Rezin was killed.

Pekah, son of Remaliah (פֶּקַח בֶּן־רְמַלְיָהוּ) was king of Israel (ca. 740–732 B.C.). He seized power through a coup and pursued an anti-Assyrian policy. Isaiah refers to him dismissively only as "the son of Remaliah" (vv. 4, 5, 9), emphasizing his lack of legitimacy.

Shear-Jashub (שְׁאָר יָשׁוּב, "a remnant shall return") was Isaiah’s son, whose symbolic name carried a prophetic message of both judgment and hope.

Places

"The aqueduct of the upper pool, on the road to the Fuller’s Field" (v. 3) was a strategically important location for Jerusalem’s water supply. Ahaz likely inspected the city’s defenses and water resources in anticipation of a siege. This place is probably identical with the area where the Siloam Tunnel was later built under Hezekiah, in the Kidron Valley outside the city walls.

The inscriptions mention Tiglath-Pileser’s campaigns against Damascus and Israel, the tribute from "Jehoahaz of Judah," and the conquest of Israelite cities. This confirms that Ahaz indeed sought Assyrian help, as described in 2 Kings 16:7–9, and that the immediate fulfillment of the prophecy (that the two kings would fall) took place as predicted.
