This is what the LORD says: Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where, then, is the house you would build for me? Where is the place of my rest?

My own hand made all these things, and so they all came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one I look upon: the humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at my word.

Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man; whoever sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog's neck; whoever presents a grain offering, like one who offers pig's blood; whoever burns incense, like one who blesses an idol. They have chosen their own ways, and their souls delight in their abominations.

So I in turn will choose harsh treatment for them and bring upon them the very thing they dread. For I called, and no one answered; I spoke, and they did not listen. They did what was evil in my eyes and chose what did not please me.

Hear the word of the LORD, you who tremble at his word: Your own brothers, who hate you and cast you out for my name's sake, have said, "Let the LORD show his glory, so we may see your joy!" But they are the ones who will be put to shame.

An uproar from the city! A sound from the temple! The voice of the LORD, repaying his enemies what they deserve!

Before she was in labor, she gave birth; before the pains came upon her, she delivered a son.

Who has ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen the like? Can a land be born in a single day? Can a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet no sooner was Zion in labor than she gave birth to her children.

Shall I bring to the point of birth and not deliver? says the LORD. Shall I who bring forth close the womb? says your God.

Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her, all you who love her. Exult with her in joy, all you who mourn over her,

so that you may nurse and be satisfied at her comforting breasts, so that you may drink deeply and delight in her abundant glory.

For this is what the LORD says: I am about to extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of the nations like a flooding stream. You will nurse and be carried on her hip and dandled on her knees.

As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; in Jerusalem you will be comforted.

You will see it, and your heart will rejoice; your bones will flourish like new grass. The hand of the LORD will be made known to his servants, but his fury against his enemies.

See, the LORD is coming with fire, and his chariots like a whirlwind, to unleash his anger in wrath and his rebuke with flames of fire.

For with fire and with his sword the LORD will execute judgment on all flesh, and many will be the slain of the LORD.

Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following the one in the middle,^f who eat the flesh of pigs and vermin and mice—they will all come to an end together, declares the LORD.

For I know their deeds and their thoughts. The time is coming when I will gather all nations and tongues, and they will come and see my glory.

I will set a sign among them, and from among them I will send survivors to the nations—to Tarshish, to Put and Lud who draw the bow, to Tubal and Greece, and to the distant coastlands that have never heard my fame or seen my glory. And they will proclaim my glory among the nations.

They will bring all your brothers from all the nations as an offering to the LORD—on horses and in chariots and wagons, on mules and camels—to my holy mountain, Jerusalem, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in clean vessels to the house of the LORD.

And some of them I will take as priests and Levites, says the LORD.

For just as the new heavens and the new earth that I am making will endure before me, declares the LORD, so your offspring and your name will endure.

From new moon to new moon and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh will come to bow down before me, says the LORD.

And they will go out and look on the corpses of those who rebelled against me. For their worm will not die, their fire will not be quenched, and they will be a horror to all flesh.

Tubal was located in central Anatolia, and Javan is the Hebrew name for Greece and the Greek islands. These places represent "the distant coastlands" and mark God's universal dominion that extends to the ends of the earth.

Events and Customs

Garden rituals (v. 17) refer to syncretistic cultic practices in which Israelites "consecrated and purified themselves" in gardens to worship foreign deities. Such garden sanctuaries were associated with Canaanite fertility cults and possibly the worship of deities like Tammuz. The practice of eating pork and mice was forbidden under Mosaic law (Lev 11), but it occurred in certain pagan mystery rituals where participants ate unclean animals as part of initiation ceremonies.

Critique of sacrifices (v. 3) describes how correct rituals are equated with detestable acts: slaughtering an ox is like killing a human, offering a lamb is like breaking a dog's neck.
