Woe to you, Ariel, Ariel, the city where David camped! Add year to year, let the festivals run their round—
then I will lay siege to Ariel, and there will be mourning and lament; she will become to me like an altar hearth.
I will encamp against you all around, I will ring you with towers and raise siege works against you.
Brought low, you will speak from the ground; your words will come muffled out of the dust. Your voice will rise like a ghost's from the earth, and out of the dust your speech will whisper.
But the horde of your enemies will become like fine dust, the multitude of the ruthless like blowing chaff. And it will happen in an instant, suddenly:
She will be visited in judgment by the LORD of hosts—with thunder and earthquake and a great roar, with whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a devouring fire.
Then the horde of all the nations that fight against Ariel—all who war against her, who besiege her and press her hard—will be like a dream, a vision in the night.
As a hungry man dreams he is eating, but wakes with his hunger unsatisfied; as a thirsty man dreams he is drinking, but wakes faint, his thirst unquenched—so it will be with the horde of all the nations that fight against Mount Zion.
Be dazed and dumbfounded! Blind yourselves and be blind! You are drunk, but not from wine; you stagger, but not from strong drink.
For the LORD has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep; he has shut your eyes—the prophets—and covered your heads—the seers.
For you this whole vision is like the words of a sealed scroll. Give it to someone who can read and say, "Please read this," and he will answer, "I cannot; it is sealed."
Or give the scroll to someone who cannot read and say, "Please read this," and he will answer, "I do not know how to read."
The Lord says: "Because these people come near me with their mouths and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their worship of me is nothing but rules taught by men—
Therefore I will astound this people once more with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of their wise will perish, and the understanding of their clever ones will vanish."
Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their work in darkness and say, "Who sees us? Who knows?"
You have turned things upside down! Is the clay the equal of the potter? Shall what is made say of its maker, "He did not make me"? Shall the pot say of the potter, "He knows nothing"?
In just a little while, Lebanon will become an orchard, and the orchard will seem like a forest.
On that day the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind will see.
Once more the humble will rejoice in the LORD, and the poor among men will exult in the Holy One of Israel.
For the ruthless will be no more, the mocker will vanish, and all who lie in wait to do evil will be cut down—
those who with a word make a man out to be guilty, who ensnare the one who testifies in court, and with empty charges deny justice to the innocent.
Therefore this is what the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, says to the house of Jacob: "No longer will Jacob be ashamed; no longer will their faces grow pale.
When they see their children, the work of my hands among them, they will keep my name holy; they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One of Jacob and stand in awe of the God of Israel.
Those who have gone astray in spirit will gain understanding, and those who grumble will learn wisdom."
