A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman keeps guard in vain.

In vain you rise early and stay up late, eating the bread of anxious toil; for the LORD gives sleep to the one he loves.

Look, children are a heritage from the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward.

Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the sons of one's youth.

How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them! They will not be put to shame when they contend with enemies at the gate.

The psalm is attributed to Solomon (לִשְׁלֹמֹה), the only one of the pilgrimage psalms with this attribution. The connection to Solomon is significant for several reasons: He was known as the builder of the temple (1 Kings 6–8), and the wordplay between the name Solomon (שְׁלֹמֹה) and "peace/wholeness" (שָׁלוֹם) underscores the psalm's theme of blessing and rest. Solomon's famous wisdom regarding work, rest, and family life, as expressed in Ecclesiastes, is also reflected in this psalm's themes.

The psalm mentions "the city" (עִיר) and "the gate" (שָׁעַר). In ancient Israel, the city gate was the central place for legal decisions, business transactions, and public debate. Here the elders gathered to settle disputes and make agreements (cf. Ruth 4:1–11). When verse 5 mentions speaking with enemies "at the gate," it refers to legal confrontations where many sons gave a man authority and support in public matters.
