As fire sets brushwood ablaze and makes water boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies, so that the nations tremble before you.
When you did awesome things we did not look for, you came down, and the mountains melted away before you.
From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God but you, who acts for the one who waits for him.
You come to meet those who rejoice to do what is right, who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, for we went on sinning; in our sins we have lived a long time—can we still be saved?
We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment. We all wither like a leaf, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
No one calls on your name or rouses himself to take hold of you, for you have hidden your face from us and made us waste away in the grip of our sins.
Yet, LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.
Do not be angry beyond measure, LORD; do not remember our sin forever. Look upon us, we pray: we are all your people.
Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
Our holy and glorious house, where our fathers praised you, has been burned with fire, and all that we treasured lies in ruins.
After all this, LORD, will you hold back? Will you keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?
