A maskil of Asaph. Why, O God, have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
Remember the congregation you purchased long ago, the tribe you redeemed as your own inheritance, Mount Zion, where you have made your dwelling.
Turn your steps toward these endless ruins, toward all the destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.
Your foes roared in the midst of your meeting place; they set up their own standards as signs.
They looked like men swinging axes high against a thicket of trees.
And then all its carved work they smashed with hatchets and hammers.
They set your sanctuary on fire; they defiled the dwelling place of your name, leveling it to the ground.
They said in their hearts, "We will crush them completely." They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land.
We no longer see our signs; there is no prophet left, and no one among us knows how long.
How long, O God, will the adversary mock? Will the enemy revile your name forever?
Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the fold of your robe and destroy them!
Yet God is my king from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
You split open the sea by your strength; you shattered the heads of the sea monsters on the waters.
You crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert.
You opened up springs and streams; you dried up ever-flowing rivers.
The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the light and the sun.
You set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.
Remember this, LORD: the enemy has mocked you, and a foolish people has reviled your name.
Do not hand over the life of your dove to the wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted forever.
Have regard for your covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of the haunts of violence.
Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace; let the poor and needy praise your name.
Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; remember how fools mock you all day long.
Do not forget the voices of your adversaries, the uproar of those who rise against you, ascending without ceasing.
