Put the trumpet to your lips! Like an eagle the enemy sweeps down on the house of the LORD, because they have broken my covenant and rebelled against my law.
To me they cry out, "My God, we know you—we, Israel!"
Israel has rejected what is good; an enemy will hunt him down.
They set up kings, but not from me; they appointed princes, and I knew nothing of it. With their silver and gold they made themselves idols—only to be cut off.
Your calf is rejected, Samaria! My anger burns against them. How long will they be unable to become clean?
For it came from Israel; a craftsman made it, and it is no god at all. The calf of Samaria will be broken to splinters.
For they sow the wind, and they reap the whirlwind. He has no standing grain; the sprout yields no flour. And if it should yield, strangers would swallow it down.
Israel is swallowed up. Now they are among the nations like a vessel no one wants.
For they have gone up to Assyria—a wild donkey wandering off alone. Ephraim has bargained for lovers.
Though they bargain among the nations, I will now gather them in, and in a little while they will writhe under the burden of the king of princes.
Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning, and those altars have become his sinning.
Though I write out for him the countless precepts of my law, they are treated as something foreign.
They offer sacrifices as gifts to me and eat the meat, but the LORD takes no pleasure in them. Now he will remember their guilt and call their sins to account; they will return to Egypt.
Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces, and Judah has multiplied fortified cities. But I will send fire upon his cities, and it will devour her citadels.
