God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

His tent is in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion.

There he shattered the flashing arrows, the shield and the sword and the weapons of war. Selah

You are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with prey.

The stouthearted lie plundered, sunk in their final sleep; not one of the warriors could lift a hand.

At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both chariot and horse lay stunned.

You alone are to be feared. Who can stand before you when your anger flares?

From heaven you pronounced judgment, and the earth was afraid and fell silent,

when God rose up to judge, to save all the afflicted of the earth. Selah

Even human wrath brings you praise; with the remnant of their rage you gird yourself.

Make your vows to the LORD your God and keep them; let all the neighboring nations bring gifts to the one who is to be feared.

He breaks the spirit of rulers; he is feared by the kings of the earth.

The name is related to the Hebrew word for peace (shalom), and the connection between "his dwelling" (סֻכּוֹ, sukko) and Salem emphasizes that God has chosen this place as his home. Zion was originally the designation for the Jebusite fortress that David captured, but later came to refer to the entire temple hill and symbolically to all of Jerusalem as God’s holy city.

The psalm describes a dramatic military victory in which the enemies’ weapons – "the flaming arrows of the bow" (רִשְׁפֵי־קָשֶׁת, rishfe-qashet), shields, swords, and war – are shattered. Many scholars link this to the failed siege of Jerusalem by the Assyrian king Sennacherib in 701 B.C., described in 2 Kings 18–19 and Isaiah 36–37, where according to the text 185,000 Assyrian soldiers were struck down by the angel of the Lord in one night. The expression that "the proud of heart" (אַבִּירֵי לֵב, abbire lev) fell asleep and could not find their hands (v. 6) fits well with the image of an army paralyzed without a fight.
