For the choirmaster. A psalm of David.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.

There is no speech, there are no words, no sound of their voice is heard.

Yet their line goes out through all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In them he has pitched a tent for the sun,

which comes out like a bridegroom from his chamber, rejoicing like a champion to run its course.

It rises at one end of the heavens and circles to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commandment of the LORD is radiant, giving light to the eyes.

The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The judgments of the LORD are true, and altogether righteous.

They are more desirable than gold, than much pure gold; sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.

Moreover, by them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Who can discern his own errors? Cleanse me from my hidden faults.

Keep your servant also from willful sins; do not let them rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Events and Customs

Psalm 19 contains a striking image of the sun as a bridegroom coming out of his "bride chamber" (חֻפָּה, chuppah) and as a hero (גִּבּוֹר, gibbor) who runs his course with joy (v. 6). This image reflects Israelite wedding customs in which the bridegroom emerged from the bridal chamber in festive splendor. At the same time, this stands in sharp contrast to sun worship in surrounding cultures. In Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Canaan, the sun was worshipped as a deity—Ra in Egypt, Shamash in Babylon. The psalm deliberately demythologizes the sun by portraying it as a creation that testifies to God’s glory, not as an independent god. The sun has been given a "tent" (אֹהֶל) by God Himself, emphasizing that it is subordinate to its Creator.

Key Terms

The second part of the psalm (vv. 8–11) contains rich terminology for God’s revelation through Scripture. Six different expressions are used: torat YHWH (תּוֹרַת יְהוָה, the law/teaching of the Lord), edut YHWH (עֵדוּת יְהוָה, the testimony of the Lord), piqqude YHWH (פִּקּוּדֵי יְהוָה, the precepts of the Lord), mitsvat YHWH (מִצְוַת יְהוָה, the commandment of the Lord), yirat YHWH (יִרְאַת יְהוָה, the fear of the Lord), and mishpete YHWH (מִשְׁפְּטֵי יְהוָה, the judgments of the Lord). This variety shows that "the law of the Lord" encompasses more than legal rules—it includes guidance, exhortation, and wisdom instruction. The term peti (פֶּתִי, "the simple/inexperienced") in v. 8b does not refer to a foolish person, but to one who is open and teachable—one who needs wisdom. This is a key concept in wisdom literature.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Several texts from the ancient Near East show parallels to the first part of the psalm. The Egyptian "Hymn to Aton" (c. 1350 BC) praises the life-giving power of the sun, and Babylonian hymns to the sun god Shamash describe him as the upholder of justice. What is remarkable about Psalm 19 is that it deliberately avoids attributing divine status to the sun—the heavens proclaim God’s glory but are not worshipped themselves. The combination of general revelation (vv. 2–7) and special revelation through Scripture (vv. 8–14), concluded with a prayer (v. 15), within the same psalm is unique in Old Testament literature and shows how Israelite faith integrated the testimony of creation with the concrete guidance of the Torah.
