Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the poor; let them be caught in the schemes they devise.

The wicked man boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and spurns the LORD.

In his pride the wicked man does not seek God; God is nowhere in all his thoughts.

His ways prosper at every turn; your judgments are far above him, out of his sight; he sneers at all his enemies.

He says in his heart, "I will never be shaken; no harm will touch me, from generation to generation."

His mouth is filled with cursing, deceit, and oppression; under his tongue are malice and trouble.

He lies in wait near the villages; from hiding he murders the innocent, watching in secret for the helpless.

He lurks in his hiding place like a lion in the thicket; he lies in wait to seize the poor, and seizes them, dragging them off in his net.

His victim is crushed and sinks down; the helpless fall beneath his strength.

He says in his heart, "God has forgotten; he has hidden his face and will never see."

Rise up, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the afflicted.

Why does the wicked man revile God and say in his heart, "He will not call me to account"?

But you do see; you take note of trouble and grief, to take it into your hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.

Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer; call him to account for his wickedness, until none is found.

The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.

You hear the longing of the afflicted, LORD; you strengthen their heart and incline your ear,

to bring justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere mortals of the earth may strike terror no more.
