Praise the LORD! Blessed is the one who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments.

His descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.

Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.

Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, for the one who is gracious, merciful, and righteous.

It goes well with the one who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice.

He will never be shaken; the righteous will be remembered forever.

He has no fear of bad news; his heart is steady, trusting in the LORD.

His heart is secure; he will not fear, until at last he looks in triumph on his foes.

He scatters gifts freely, giving to the needy; his righteousness endures forever, and his horn is lifted high in honor.

The wicked sees it and is angered; he grinds his teeth and melts away. The desire of the wicked will perish.

Psalm 112 is an acrostic psalm in which each half-verse begins with a new letter of the Hebrew alphabet, from א (alef) to ת (tav). This was a poetic technique used for memorization and teaching. The psalm functions as a "twin psalm" to Psalm 111—while Psalm 111 describes God's character and works, Psalm 112 describes how the godly person reflects these qualities. Both psalms share several key expressions, such as "his righteousness endures forever" (צִדְקָתוֹ עֹמֶדֶת לָעַד).

The Hebrew word צִדְקָה (tsidqah, "righteousness") appears twice (vv. 3, 9) and here describes not only moral uprightness but also practical generosity toward the poor. In Jewish tradition, this word later became synonymous with "charity"—a understanding rooted in texts like this one.

The expression יָרֵא אֶת־יְהוָה (yare et-YHWH, "fears the Lord") in verse 1 denotes not terror but reverence and respectful obedience. This was the core of the wisdom tradition and marked the proper relationship between humanity and God.

The description of the righteous person as one who "lends" (v. 5, מַלְוֶה) reflects the Israelite ideal of interest-free loans to poor Israelites (Exod 22:25; Lev 25:35–37). To "scatter and give to the poor" (v. 9, פִּזַּר נָתַן לָאֶבְיוֹנִים) was a concrete social obligation, not merely pious language. Wealthy Israelites were expected to share from their abundance, especially during festivals and at harvest time.

"His horn is lifted in honor" (v. 9, קַרְנוֹ תָּרוּם בְּכָבוֹד) uses the horn metaphor as a symbol of strength and dignity. This image was widespread throughout the ancient Near East, where horns from oxen and rams represented power.
