A psalm of Asaph. The Mighty One, God, the LORD, has spoken; he summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.

May our God come and not keep silence; before him a devouring fire, around him a raging storm.

He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, to judge his people:

"Gather my faithful ones to me, who sealed my covenant by sacrifice."

And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah.

"Listen, my people, and I will speak; Israel, I will testify against you: I am God, your God.

It is not for your sacrifices that I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are always before me.

I take no bull from your house, no goats from your pens.

For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.

I know every bird of the mountains, and every creature of the field is mine.

If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all that fills it is mine.

Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and fulfill your vows to the Most High.

Then call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

But to the wicked God says: "What right have you to recite my statutes, or take my covenant on your lips?

You hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.

When you see a thief, you approve of him; you throw in your lot with adulterers.

You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.

You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son.

These things you have done, and I kept silent; you thought I was just like you. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before your eyes.

Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you apart, with no one to rescue you.

Whoever offers thanksgiving honors me, and to the one whose way is upright I will show the salvation of God."

The expression "perfect in beauty" (מִכְלַל־יֹפִי) reflects the idea of the temple as the beautiful meeting place between heaven and earth.

Events and Customs

The psalm addresses the sacrificial system and its proper understanding. Verse 5 mentions "those who make a covenant with me by sacrifice" (כֹּרְתֵי בְרִיתִי עֲלֵי־זָבַח), referring to the covenant ritual in which animals were slaughtered and the parties of the covenant walked between the pieces. The psalm does not criticize sacrifices themselves, but rather a mechanical attitude that assumed God depended on the offerings. This reflects a prophetic critique also found in Isaiah, Amos, and Micah.

The thank offering (תּוֹדָה, todah) in verses 14 and 23 was a special type of sacrifice that combined a slaughtered offering with confession and praise.
