After this Jesus traveled about in Galilee. He had no wish to go about in Judea, because the Jews were looking for a chance to kill him.
Now the Jewish Festival of Booths was near,
so his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples can see the works you are doing.
For no one acts in secret while wanting to be known in public. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.
For not even his brothers believed in him.
So Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come. For you, any time is right.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify that its works are evil.
You go up to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come."
After saying this, he stayed on in Galilee.
But once his brothers had gone up to the festival, he went up as well—not openly, but in secret.
So the Jews were looking for him at the festival and asking, "Where is that man?"
And there was much muttering about him among the crowds. Some said, "He is a good man." Others said, "No, he is deceiving the people."
Still, no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up to the temple and began to teach.
The Jews were astonished. "How does this man have such learning," they said, "when he has never been trained?"
Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not my own; it comes from him who sent me.
Anyone who is willing to do God's will shall know whether this teaching comes from God or whether I am speaking on my own.
Whoever speaks on his own is seeking his own glory. But the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is truthful, and there is nothing dishonest in him.
Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"
The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"
Jesus answered them, "I did one work, and you are all astounded.
Moses gave you circumcision—though it did not come from Moses but from the patriarchs—and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
If a man is circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you furious with me for making a man's whole body well on the Sabbath?
Stop judging by appearances; judge with a right judgment."
Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, "Isn't this the man they want to kill?
Yet here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the authorities have actually concluded that he is the Christ?
But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from."
Then Jesus, teaching in the temple, cried out, "Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own. The one who sent me is true, and him you do not know.
I know him, because I come from him, and he sent me."
At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Still, many in the crowd believed in him and said, "When the Christ comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?"
The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent guards to arrest him.
So Jesus said, "I am with you only a little while longer, and then I go to him who sent me.
You will look for me and will not find me, and where I am you cannot come."
The Jews said to one another, "Where does he intend to go, that we won't find him? Is he going to the Jews scattered among the Greeks, to teach the Greeks?
What does he mean by saying, 'You will look for me and will not find me, and where I am you cannot come'?"
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.
Whoever believes in me—as the Scripture has said—out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water."
He said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive; for the Spirit had not yet been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, "This really is the Prophet."
Others said, "He is the Christ." But others said, "Surely the Christ does not come from Galilee?
Doesn't Scripture say that the Christ comes from David's line, from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"
So the crowd was divided over him.
Some of them wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.
When the guards returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, they were asked, "Why haven't you brought him in?"
The guards answered, "No one has ever spoken like this man."
"You haven't been deceived too, have you?" the Pharisees replied.
"Has a single one of the rulers believed in him, or any of the Pharisees?
But this crowd, which knows nothing of the law—they are under a curse."
Nicodemus, who had gone to him earlier and was one of their own, said to them,
"Does our law judge a man without first hearing from him and learning what he is doing?"
They answered him, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and see: no prophet arises from Galilee."
Then each of them went to his own home.
