14"For it is like a man going away on a journey. He called his own servants and entrusted his property to them.

15To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, each according to his ability. Then he went away.

16The one who had received the five talents went at once and put the money to work and gained five more.

17In the same way, the one with two talents gained two more.

18But the one who had received a single talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master's money.

19After a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

20The one who had received five talents came forward with five more. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'

21His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a little; I will put you in charge of much. Come and share your master's joy.'

22The one with the two talents also came forward. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more.'

23His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a little; I will put you in charge of much. Come and share your master's joy.'

24Then the one who had received the single talent came forward. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew you were a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter seed.

25So I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here—you have what is yours.'

26His master answered him, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I did not scatter seed?

27Then you should have put my money in the bank, and when I came back I would have received it with interest.

28So take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.

29For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.

30And throw that worthless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

11As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear at any moment.

12So he said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and then to return.

13He called ten of his servants, gave them ten minas, and said to them, 'Put this money to work until I come back.'

14But his countrymen hated him, and they sent a delegation after him to say, 'We do not want this man to be our king.'

15When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered the servants to whom he had given the money to be called in, so he could find out what they had gained by trading.

16The first came forward and said, 'Master, your mina has earned ten more.'

17He said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Since you have been faithful with a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.'

18The second came and said, 'Your mina, master, has made five more.'

19He said to this one as well, 'You too—take charge of five cities.'

20Then another came and said, 'Master, here is your mina. I kept it laid away in a cloth,

21because I was afraid of you. You are a harsh man: you take what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.'

22He said to him, 'Out of your own mouth I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I am a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?

23Then why didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back I could have collected it with interest?'

24Then he said to those standing there, 'Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten.'

25They said to him, 'Master, he already has ten minas!'

26'I tell you, to everyone who has, more will be given; but from the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.

27But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king—bring them here and slaughter them in front of me.'"

"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
The foolish ones took their lamps but brought no oil with them,
while the wise ones took flasks of oil along with their lamps.
The bridegroom was a long time in coming, so they all grew drowsy and fell asleep.
Then all those virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'
But the wise ones answered, 'No—there may not be enough for us and for you. Go instead to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves.'
While they were away buying it, the bridegroom came. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.
Later the other virgins came too. 'Lord, Lord,' they said, 'open the door for us!'
But he answered, 'Truly I tell you, I do not know you.'

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to me.'
Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
And the King will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
Then they too will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'
Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
And they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
