A psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

O God, you are my God; I seek you at dawn. My soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

So I have gazed on you in the sanctuary, to see your power and your glory.

Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.

So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of food, and with joyful lips my mouth will praise you.

When I remember you on my bed, I think of you through the watches of the night.

For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.

My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

But those who seek my life to destroy it will go down to the depths of the earth.

They will be handed over to the sword; they will become food for jackals.

But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by him will exult, for the mouths of liars will be silenced.

Water scarcity was real and life-threatening; the few springs in the area (such as En-Gedi) were vital oases.

Traditionally, the psalm is linked to David’s flight from Saul (1 Sam 23–24) or from Absalom (2 Sam 15–17), both situations where David sought refuge in this inhospitable terrain. The reference to "the sanctuary" (בַּקֹּדֶשׁ, v. 3) suggests that the psalmist longs to return to a place of worship from which he is cut off.
