For the choirmaster: to the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." A miktam of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath. [^1] [^1]: The meaning of "miktam" is uncertain; it may indicate a type of psalm or musical setting. The Hebrew of the tune name is also uncertain and may mean "the silent dove of distant places."

Have mercy on me, O God, for men are hounding me; all day long they press their attack.

My enemies hound me all day long; many are fighting me in their arrogance.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere flesh do to me?

All day long they twist my words; all their thoughts are bent on harming me.

They lie in wait, they lurk in hiding, watching my every step, eager to take my life.

For such wickedness, do not let them escape; in your anger, O God, bring the nations down.

You have kept count of my wanderings; store my tears in your flask — are they not recorded in your book?

Then my enemies will turn back on the day I call for help. This I know: God is on my side.

In God I praise his word; in the LORD I praise his word.

in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

I owe you my vows, O God; I will fulfill them with thank offerings to you.

For you have delivered my soul from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
