For the choirmaster: to the tune of "Do Not Destroy." A psalm of Asaph. A song.

We give you thanks, O God, we give you thanks, for your name is near; people recount your wonders.

"When I take up the appointed time, it is I who judge with fairness.

When the earth and all who live in it are reeling, it is I who hold its pillars firm. Selah

I say to the boastful, 'Boast no more,' and to the wicked, 'Do not lift up your horn.'

Do not lift your horn on high, or speak insolence with a stiff neck."

For lifting up comes neither from the east nor from the west, nor from the wilderness of the mountains.

It is God who judges: he brings one down and lifts another up.

In the LORD's hand is a cup of foaming wine, fully mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to the very dregs.

But as for me, I will proclaim it forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.

"I will cut off all the horns of the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted high."

"Horn" (קֶרֶן, qeren) – This word appears five times in the psalm (vv. 5, 6, 11) and is a central symbol. In ancient Near Eastern culture, the horn represented power, strength, and authority. The image is drawn from oxen and wild oxen, whose horns were their weapons and signs of dominance. To "lift up the horn" meant to act arrogantly and self-confidently, while to "cut off the horns" meant to crush someone’s power.
