When the Ziphites came and told Saul, "Isn't David hiding among us?"

Save me, O God, by your name; vindicate me by your might.

Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth.

For strangers have risen against me, and ruthless men seek my life; they have not set God before them. Selah

But see, God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my life.

He will turn the evil back on my foes; in your faithfulness, put an end to them.

I will sacrifice to you with a freewill offering; I will praise your name, O LORD, for it is good.

For he has delivered me from every trouble, and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.

People

Psalm 54 names a specific group: the Ziphites (הַזִּיפִים, hazzifim). These were the inhabitants of Ziph, a town in the tribe of Judah. According to the superscription, they betrayed David by reporting his hiding place to King Saul. This event is described in 1 Samuel 23:19–24 and 26:1–5. The betrayal by the Ziphites is remarkable because they belonged to David’s own tribe, Judah. This likely explains why David refers to his enemies as "strangers" (זָרִים, zarim) in verse 5—not ethnically foreign people, but individuals who acted like strangers by breaking tribal loyalty.

Places

Ziph was located in the hill country southeast of Hebron, in the wilderness of Judah. The area is identified today with Tell Zif, about 6 kilometers south of Hebron. The region was characterized by desert terrain with caves and ravines suitable for hiding. David stayed in this inaccessible landscape while fleeing from Saul. Precisely because the Ziphites knew the area well, they were able to inform Saul of David’s exact position.

The word עָרִיצִים (aritsim), translated as "violent men" or "tyrants" in verse 5, describes ruthless people who use power without regard for God.
